American Slang Part 1

Here we start a series of articles reporting each a few very useful words typical of american slang that are almost unknown and/or misknown here in other countries. I wont say they are the words of the month, but I think they could be useful all the same.

An Abbreviated piece of nothing: a nobody;
AC/DC: bisexual;
Activated: drunken and intoxicated by alchohol;
Airhead (Airbrain): fool, sb who has air where brain should be;
Alky (Alchy) (Alkie): alchoholic drink;
Alibi Ike: someone who always has an alibi for non doing sth.;
All in: exhausted;
All systems are go: all right (from rockets);
All that meat and no potatoes: an enormous fatso;
All the way: with everything on it (ex. a hamburger);
All wet: completely wrong;
Ammunition: toilet tissue; also liquor;
Ancient history: a past romance now totally forgotten;
Ante: price to pay before playing (poker), price in general;
Applesauce: nonsense;
Ark: an old car;
Arm: police officer (long ARM of the law);
Armpit: a nasty place;
Around the bend: crazy, beyond sanity;
ASAP: As Soon As Possible;
Asleep at the switch: inattentive to duty, but not asleep yet;
(to be) at loose ends: bored with nothing to do;
Attic: the head;
Avs: the law of averages;
Awash: drunken;
(to be) away: in prison;
AWOL: Absent Without Leave, excaped from prison or military;
Aztec two-step: diarrhea in South America (also 'Montezuma's Revenge').
Baby bear: a young unexperienced cop;
Baby Bell: a regional telephone company, formerly a part of AT&T;
Baby-kisser: politician;
Backbone: courage, integrity;
Backhander: a backhand slap in the face;
Backlash: negative response on something;
Back number: an old-fashioned person;
Backseat driver: sb who annoys the driver telling him how to drive;
Back-to-back: in a line, in a series;
Back to the salt mines: back to workplace (or school);
Back up: to refuse to go thru with someone, thus letting him down;
Bacon: a police officer (compare to 'pig');
Bad: excellent, powerful, intense [exp. black people];
Bad egg: a repellent person;
Bad news: the bill for something;
Bad paper: a fake check;
Bafflegab: confusing jargon.
