Survey of TSM
Job: organizer

Survey submitted: Sun 04 Jan 2009

Handle, ex-handle(s):
TSM (The Swatch-Man)

Name, birthday, origin:

Henning Schmidt, 15.08.1973, Germany

Group, ex-group(s):
TRSI - S!P/TRSi, Action!

What was your first group, your role in that group and what did that group produce?:

My first group was Action!, I was founder and Organizer and we brought several prods to the scene like intros, the Action-Vamps MegademoPreview, 2 Parties (Action Conference I and II), a series called Worldness by S-Sex and cool stuff from Peachy and Dreamer

What motivates you to spend time on the scene?:
Actually I do not spend much time really in the scene anymore - but it was the competition with others combined with cool friendship and cool dudes

What is your favorite color?:
puhh.... blue I think - depends on what object!

On what platform(s) did you begin your computing journey, and when was this?:
I began on C64 back in 1986 I think - only playing games. But somehow the intros in front of the games became more and more interesting. In 1989 I changed to my Amiga

What platform(s) do you use now?:
PC - but I still have a A500 to play KickOff 2 and an A4000 for history reasons

What is/are your favorite piece(s) of music/s - from a demo production or a scener (released outside of a demo)?:
hmmm... hard to say. I loved all the Music of Cebit 90 but I liked Jesters Sound on Turmoil very much too (that was by Bit Arts though -ed)... Virgill always does nice tunes.

What is/are your favorite picture(s) - from a demo production or a scener (released outside of a demo)?:
there are far to many - Sherryl Lee by Peachy was great, his Womsnake was too. But there is a lot of great stuff, so I do not have ONE favourite

Which project that you worked on was the most exciting and interesting for you? And why?:
Well, making TRSI a better crew or keeping the standard the scene dedicated to TRSI after the Megademo and the Cebit 90 was surely the toughest project ever in my scene life. Believe me, the Organizers (Warhead and me, lateron together with Uyanik and Control) gave everything to please the scene and show that the "sleeping gods" were still very active. It was hard to follow the standards that DELTA had set. If we bring it down to ONE project it may be the WOC Winning Demo, because that nearly broke friendship between the crew, because it was a lot of people with a lot of different opinions... Hard to deal with, even though we won the compo against Sanity... And of course Warhead and my packs "Judgment Day"....

What is your favorite demo, intro, megademo, retrogame, slideshow, musicdisk, diskmag, wilddemo?:
I like all the great Andromeda, Silents and Anarchy stuff, the misery Dentros by Dreamer and Peachy for being so well designed, I love Dan´s (A) intro with the sinus scroller with that great 4mat Tune, that Skid Row used as a cracktro, the RSI Megademo (of course), the Budbrain demos for beeing different, Mental Hangover because I stared for ours on that screen. I do not remeber too many slides or musicdisks - Virgills Viktoria, Sanitys Turmoil, all slides by Lazur. I loved and typed for Stolen Data, ROM and Zine were cool, too.

Discuss: minimalistic demos, cracktros, fucktros, joke demos, lamers, compo winners at big parties, demotools, diskmags, chiptunes, glenz vectors, programming languages, photoshop, textmode:
and WELTFRIEDEN.... hmm... minmalistics: great idea, because its much more straining to produce a minimalistic perfection than a great demo with 4 "ok" and 2 "great" parts. If your mini thimg sucks, it sucks!
- cracktros: Great! it took me at least 2 years of organizing TRSI to understand those needs of our warez guys. Cracktros are great because they have to work in that little space, the cracked game left on the disc. That was the birth of chiptunes and little effects. I love them and they hinted my way to the demoscene....
-fucktros: whereever are people they will disagree to a certain degree - fucktros are stupid because they will stay in the (digital) world forever, even if the struggle is finished
- joke demos: only like the Budbrain Prods
-lamers: everyone starts as one - I tried to support everyone as long as they did not talk shit about me or TRSI - then support stopped. I will never forget Bomber/Amaze later Anarchy - we talked a lot on the phone and he was a faster swapper than I was. With his packs I impressed a few guys in terms of speed, so I gained new contacts thanks to him. Everyone need a start!
- compo winners: great demos, great experience with the audience at the big screen I loved "The party"
-diskmags: were cool, mighty instrument to influence the scene
-chips: great! I love Emay and Blackthorne for their Chips, what Romeo did is outstanding and 4mat hat really big ones - more than 2 hours could be dangerous!
- glenz vectors were the effect of my Scene days - in every fashion - I liked them
- don know to much about the rest....

What percentage of modern demos are 3d flybys?:

80% I would say

What percentage of older demos are the same effects recycled?:
70% (some did it nice, some did not

What platform(s) needs more demos?:

I would like to see a concentration on one platform because thats easier- but as we can see all demos today as .avi or whatever - who cares

Which parties do you intend to go to, and which parties would you like to go to? Please describe your personal experiences with your most favourite or impressive party you have ever been at:

Actually no party is planned, maybe I will visit one with those other guys from the "Altenheim" - mailinglist, which is used by some old ones like Flynn, Knacko, Double, Warhead, etc. most impressive parties were the "Party" parties in Aars and especially Herning, because I like the place better, Those trips after xmas were really great. Thank you Anarchy for the best banner ever : Competition is gone - we are here ANARCHY (was it in 1992?) Will remeber that one forever...
Radwar Parties - always great fun with mostly Germans....

How did the scene alter since you are taking an active part in it? Can you explain why?:
as I do not take an active part anymore - wont judge on that on....

What are your dreams/goals in life, did scene help you and have you achieved them yet?:
Porsche 911, nice house, nice wife, nice kids, healthy family - everything rather uninspired by the scene and not yet fully achieved - but I am working on it!
Ahhh.... TRSI well known as Google and powerful as Microsoft would be nice - well guys : GO ON!

Finally, do you have some special greetings? Feel free to add links to your graphics, screenshots of effects, modules or other pieces of your work:

Well, always hard to send greetz and not to forget anyone - maybe some crucials
Warhead: for being my coolest friend in the scene

Flynn, Irata, Knacko, Hamster und alle anderen in und um Duesseldorf: for being a great crew and for the good times
Lincoln: for caring about the duesseldorf pub meetings

Jekyll/Mr. Hyde: thanks for the demos!
