Steven Velema, 16-10-1983, The Netherlands
Group, ex-group(s):
Fromage, #mod_shrine
What was your first group, your role in that group and what did that group produce?:
Fromage, music, I composed and co-organized the group for several years
What motivates you to spend time on the scene?:
The fact that most people in the scene are truly passionate about what they do
What is your favorite color?:
Red
On what platform(s) did you begin your computing journey, and when was this?:
PC (a XT with no sound), I don't remember exactly when this was... 1988? I also got a NES and Gameboy around that time
What platform(s) do you use now?:
PC, Mac, Linux. And then anything else that can be developed on (recently finished a SNES game)
What is/are your favorite piece(s) of music(s) - from a demo production or a scener (released outside of a demo)?:
I'd probably have to go with WAVE/Jeroen Tel - NINE ONE ONE
What is/are your favorite picture(s) - from a demo production or a scener(released outside of a demo)?:
aaaah uh, can't say I'm afraid...
What music program are you using the most to express yourself? Why?:
Impulse Tracker--enormous amount of control over everything while still being able to sound good. I'd be interested in a next-gen tracker if it was stable and IT-based, but i haven't seen one yet
Which composer, artist or group of the real life did inspire you most?:
anything from the NES and 90s arcade eras, as well as hiphop and IDM type producers recently
Do you play any instrument? Which?:
piano/keys, guitar, bass guitar
Which project that you worked on was the most exciting and interesting for you? And why?:
It was the SNES project I recently finished, because I never thought i'd be able to develop anything on that system!
What is your favorite demo, intro, megademo, retrogame, slideshow, musicdisk, diskmag, wilddemo?:
I was really impressed with Masagin and Metamorposis, haven't been keeping track though :/
Discuss: minimalistic demos, cracktros, fucktros, joke demos, lamers, compo winners at big parties, demotools, diskmags, chiptunes, glenz vectors, programming languages, photoshop, textmode:
All those things!?
I like minimalistic demos a lot, simple but effective design that makes sense is so much better than stupid pretentious anti-war lines.
I'm actually not a huge fan of compos in demoparties mostly because they seem to be dominated more by who has the most friends rather than who has the skills...
chiptunes are my lifeblood, I love them more than anything else in the demoscene
can't say much about the other stuff.
What percentage of modern demos are 3d flybys?:
about 50% I'd say :/ and that's not counting really crappy ones even
What percentage of older demos are the same effects recycled?:
probably again 50%
What platform(s) needs more demos?:
i like demos on weird platforms--SNES, Megadrive, DS, Dreamcast VMU...
Which parties do you intend to go to, and which parties would you like to go to? Please describe your personal experiences with your most favourite or impressive party you have ever been at.:
I kinda want to go to Blockparty in the US. most of my demoscene friends are US sceners. But I also probably want to go to demoparties in Sweden in the future
I enjoyed going to LTP4 as it was my first demoparty ever. since then i haven't really had a good demoscene party experience so i have become a bit bitter towards them.
How did the scene alter since you are taking an active part in it? Can you explain why?:
the amount of incredibly talented people that helped me learn to track and make music and so on. i never would've met them without the demoscene.
What are your dreams/goals in life, did scene help you and have you achieved them yet?:
I'm a freelance game composer. I have achieved that goal. Now I want to make enough money not to worry about it, and find a place to settle down.
