Job: graphician

Survey submitted: Sat 09 September 2006 - 12:20:06

Name:
Nick Simpson

Handle, ex-handle(s):
Shockwave

Group, ex-group(s):
DBF, S!P, Wizzcat Uk

What was your first group, your role in that group and what did that group produce?:
Started a lame group called Hanissis 5, I made gfx, we only released 2 intros and some pack disks.

What is your quest?:
World peace and a perpetual pint of guiness.

What is your favorite color?:
$0000FF

On what platform(s) did you begin your computing journey, and when was this?:
Amiga 1987

What platform(s) do you use now?:
PC, Amiga

What is/are your favorite music(s) - from a demo or a scener?:
Klisje Paa Klisje by Walkman / Cryptoburners

What is/are your favorite picture(s) - from a demo or a scener?:
Anything by Hof/Tsl was cool, Uno / Scx rocks for me too, Joe / Trsi was great, Krest of Rebels was a very cool artist and good friend of mine.

What is your favorite demo/intro/dentro/megademo?:
Scoopex Mental Hangover on the Amiga because it was so different at the time it was released and it is still watchable now.
Nowadays, I am still searching to find a demo I like better than Variform / Kewlers but it's hard because that demo is so damned good. The best ever intro for me was by Keops/Equinox , the very cool SOTA invtro with all the funky plasmas and glenze and scrolls. So cool.

Discuss: minimalistic demos, cracktros, fucktros, joke demos, lamers, compo winners at big parties, demotools, diskmags:
Minimalistic demos piss me off, I like busy productions, they are only cool if they are very small, Ie <4kb. I like cracktros, I code them for other groups , Fucktros will always have a place in the scene although nothing can ever top the "Can you feel it Angels" fucktro. Joke demos can be funny, the word Lamer is bastardised nowadays. It used to mean a person that swapped pirated stuff and did nothing else, now it is a mis-understood insult and most people who would accuse someone of being lame are pretty lame themselves. Comps have always been important to the demo scene, long live the big parties and the great prods that are made for them! Demo tools are cool to make and bad to use if you didn't code the tool. Diskmags have sadly become pointless except as something nostalgic. A good forum is just as informative.
What percentage of modern demos are 3d flybys?: Probably only 30%.. Remember that there are also a lot of small prods out that do other things like all those excellent 256 byte stuffs.
What percentage of older demos are the same effects recycled?: 80%

What platform(s) needs more demos?:
All platforms

Which parties do you intend to go to, and which parties would you like to go to?:
Sundown is the nearest for me but with a new baby on the way and work commitments it's hard to go now.

Discuss: chiptunes, glenz vectors, C, C++, and high level languages, photoshop, textmode:
As a coder I love chip tunes, the smaller the better. Some really clever stuff can be done in the composition of a chip tune with looping commands, it's almost like coding in its self! Glenz is one of those effects that used to make me so proud of my Amiga because of the bitplanes, it made them fast. I used to love them and know that back then, the PC didn't have the power to do them, now of course things are different. C++ , C, used to be called the choice of the lamer back in the day. Nowadays, most ppl use them. :-/ Hardly anyone uses asm on the PC. High level languages are ok if you can accept the fact that your stuff will run slower. They can in fact create a good challenge where you are limited by the language that you are using rather than your hardware. It all has it's place I think. Photoshop can fucking rot, it's destroyed pixel art as far as I am concerned. Textmode demos are really great, I must do one someday.

What are your dreams/goals in life, and have you achieved them yet?:
My dream is to have a happy and successful child, at the moment my girlfriend is still expecting our first baby, this will be one of the greatest challenges of my life!

Finally, do you have some special greetings?:
Firstly the two groups I am in, so everyone in DBF and S!P, Clyde and Rbraz of Gravity, Optimus of Mindlapse, A big greet to Rituel, hope you're putting the cracktros I made for you to good use, anyone else who knows me, too many to list.
