Handle, ex-handle(s):
Decipher
Name, birthday, origin:
Göksel Göktaş, 21.05.1990, Turkey
Group, ex-group(s):
Current Groups : Youth Uprising, Resident
What was your first group, your role in that group and what did that group produce?:
The first group I got a role at is Resident, where I'm still active, together we produced Caret and Wasted, also we've released one or two more small products coded at the partyplace.
What motivates you to spend time on the scene?:
I can't really say something, I just feel like it, I think this can be best described with, "Once a scener, always a scener". Plus to this, it has been always a pleasure for me to break the limits.
What is your favorite color?:
White.
On what platform(s) did you begin your computing journey, and when was this?:
I first met with a computer in 1992, I started or better, I tried to start to code in 1998 - 99. But at the very first, I tried to quit it, because I thought I would never learn the thing, and it's so hard. But you know, it's like nicotine or drugs, once you code, you can't stop coding . I'm glad that I did never quit!
What platform(s) do you use now?:
Pc, sometimes Mac (via a friend), Psp, Gp2x
What is/are your favorite piece(s) of music(s) - from a demo production or a scener (released outside of a demo)?:
Well, Gargaj's Dulcedo Cogitationis and Lost Vampiros Remix, do rule a lot.
What is your favorite programming language, effect, tool, coder, platform, book?:
My favourite programming language is C++, for the effects part I'm not sure but I always like to combine anything with distortion , in addition an acceptable amount of noise with gloom and blur are also in my faves. For the tool, I would say myself since I'm not really into any tool. My favorite coder, without any doubt is Chaos / Farbrausch. I like PC a lot as the platform and I love all Agatha Christie books.
Discuss: your first steps towards becoming a coder, who helped you, what problems did you run into, your first effect, the future of demo coding:
After I've read a book by Tubitak on computers I thought that it would be great to create my very own games. So I started to search for some resources. Believe it or not, at first I could find no one to help me, actually in Turkey youth doesn't give a shit to things like technology or improving our nation for the future (nice words eh? ). Instead they love to stick their brains with the pop culture and so. So, in the first 1,5 years, I searched some sources to learn from, I did try game creation software (very lame), what took me further was ZZT, the Epic Game's console game creator, I thought I really can do this. I didn't have internet back then. I really don't know how but after 1,5 years of usage of ready game-creation software I heard about a thing called "compiler". So, I went to a friend's and downloaded one, I really didn't know what was it or how to use it . I just downloaded it like that and came home. Apparently, that was MinGW GCC what I downloaded. I tried to understand how it works and so for almost half a year, in the meantime I have had a 56k connection and found a community called "gamedev.net". My journey in game programming started like that. After then, I tried harder and harder to learn programming. After few years I've heard of a demo party in Turkey (7D5) via oyunyapimi.org another community. I tried to attend it but missed it. But after I registered in the turkish demoscene portal's forums and did a sample layout for a planned diskmag, I found myself talking to Spritus / Resident, he asked me if I want to be a part of Resident (thanks bro, I really owe you my life ). Then we started to work on a prod for Nightshift 2006, Caret, I coded a small Mandelbrot for it, apparently it came out nice, so that was my first effect. And for the future of demo coding, wait and see, Youth Uprising is still so young, fear us 'cuz we'll be the future of this demoscene thing!
Which project that you worked on was the most exciting and interesting for you? And why?:
Actually, the project I work on now is the most exciting one for me, it's a demo called Lachrymal. I'm really really happy to see it coming out because how to tell it, it's like my own son . I love it with the most passion. And it has a very nice theme.
What is your favorite demo, intro, megademo, retrogame, slideshow, musicdisk, diskmag, wilddemo?:
My favorite demo is 1995 by Kewlers also I like all Synesthetics and all ASD products a lot, but 1995 has a different place, it's the only demo that could make me cry so far. My favorite intro is Chaos Theory by Conspiracy, Gargaj's skills combined with Zoom's and BoyC's ones always amaze me. I really don't know any megademo so far, maybe I'm to newskool fo them? For the retrogame I would say Prince of Persia's very first game, damn I still want to play it. TRSI's PSP slideshow was great, that's my fave. For the musicdisk I "really" love Awekening series by Allien Senses. For the diskmag, I feel pain in my eyes . And finally as wild, I literally love Yodel's Wildlife, it's the best Discovery Channel documentary ever made!
Discuss: minimalistic demos, cracktros, fucktros, joke demos, lamers, compo winners at big parties, demotools, diskmags, chiptunes, glenz vectors, programming languages, photoshop, textmode:
Well there's nothing much to say, lamers suck and Assembly gamers are lamers yeah. Programming languages rule a lot except lisp and derivants. Winning a compo might be cool, but I go to a party for my friends and to feel my blood vessels with scene spirit, so winning or losing doesn't mean a lot to me. I think a scener always wins . Demotools are great, I mean if you code yourself one, otherwise you suck not the demotool! Textmode is amazing, I think I'll try to release more textmode demos.
What percentage of modern demos are 3d flybys?:
85%
What percentage of older demos are the same effects recycled?:
99.99%
What platform(s) needs more demos?:
PC! Gp2X, Playstation 3 and NOT XBOX, damn Microsoft...
Which parties do you intend to go to, and which parties would you like to go to? Please describe your personal experiences with your most favourite or impressive party you have ever been at.:
The most impressive party I've ever been at was Function in Hungary. It has the atmosphere and it was amazing to meet Conspiracy members that I worship for quite a long time . I surely am gonna visit Function every year, also Gargaj says that it is gonna be bigger and better this year so be there or else... Also I would like to attend Breakpoint, Chaos Constructions, Assembly, tUM and Buenzli.
How did the scene alter since you are taking an active part in it? Can you explain why?:
I think scene is becoming better and eliter, because obviously when hardware limits enlarge we push harder to break those limits . It's so much fun to see a demo chewing and spitting the final technology with its heavyload effects.
What are your dreams/goals in life, did scene help you and have you achieved them yet?:
Ah my dreams, let's see ; I'd like to study in MIT, I'd like to establish a small indie game programming company and I'd like to become something. Actually, scene does help a lot. You know what while writing these lines I tremble somewhat.
Finally, do you have some special greetings? Feel free to add links to your graphics, screenshots of effects, modules or other pieces of your work.:
I'd like to greet especially Spritus, the guy I see as a brother, for letting me discover this world . Also I'd like to greet Gargaj, who helps and smiles always. He's one of the best guys I've ever known. Finally I'd like to greet all the friends I know in the scene.
