Hackerland - A book about the Scene! - by Evrimsson/Nuance

Many people were curious, when on the Mekka+Symposium Party '98 four guys from the german television WDR appeared. They began shooting and recording around the party place.

We think that they did a good work. On the West 3 television, the report was quite good. It was objective and no nonsense were reported about the Scene. They mentioned even the Demoscene and also their relation to the illegal Scene. Because many Sceners complained about some guys, who told them some scene-related trash, the chief editor, decided not to send those parts on the TV. That all was possible, because the chief editor of the WDR television is a friend of two Sceners: that's Merlin-M and me from Nuance. And we invited them to come to the party place to make this report. We insisted to be mentioned on the report as book authors.

The whole idea

After beeing a long time in the Scene, many things happened seem to be forgotten by many people. We were upset about many untrue reports published in media - hackers and stuff like that for example. It was a cold and boring walk in downtown Cologne, when Merlin-M! of Nuance and I (eVRIMSSON of Nuance) had this idea: Why don't we just write a book about the Scene? We wanted to write to whole story about it. What really happened, where does this organisation come from? It should include everything about it that even in the far future, when the Scene is not the same like it was before, that everyone can read and remember - everybody, even the public world can read and understand, where for example at least some things from the big computer software industry come from: The Demoscene.

For many sceners, this kind of stuff seems is not the Scene anymore, and they use to say, that this is commercial. But the reason to write a book about the Scene was idealistic. We knew that the work we invested in that book will never be paid. The most important thing was, to write something, which is absolutely true. After working on the book, we realized, that the truth about the Scene is much more interesting than any other crap articles published by any other unserious media publishers. Working

The idea was nice, but make it to be real was different. On September 1997 we started to talk and construct the parts of the book. About three weeks later, we started to write. After seven months working, the main part of the book was finished. We spent another month to let the book corrected by a lecturer and also to let it checked by our lawyers that nobody can sue us for names and facts mentioned in the book. Lastly, after ten months of hard working, the job was done.

Publishing

The book will be published in german first. It will be out on March 1998 and will be available in any book store in Germany. Our publisher is "Tropen Verlag". For any more information about the book, have a look at my personal website: http://www.hackerland.de. We all hope, that this book will be liked especially by the Scene. It's about the Scene and for best results, it should be excepted by the Scene. We'll wait and see...

In the meanwhile they have released their second book Hackertales.

This article was also originally published in the Amiga demoscene diskmag Jurassic Pack.
