Interview (MediasRes) of: Andreas Tadic/Team 17

Handle:
Andreas Tadic of Team 17

How did you come up with your alias ?
I had a few, but BloodySwede is the mostly used one (around the office anyway). Martyn Brown gave me the alias after we all met first time and had a few good nights out.

City / Country:
Olofstrom, Sweden.

Born year:
1971 (72?) no, 71. (or was it 42?)

What was your first computer, and when did you get it?
ZX spectrum. When I was 9 I think. Felt like a bought a alias..

How did you get into the scene and what groups have you been a member of ?
Through demo programming. Made a few demos and met some people. I met "The Big A" and we formed "Crack Force Five" which later became Phenomena. I got busy doing a little shootem up using HalfBright. Technically it was impressive at the time, but looked shite.. Got in touch with a few different artists and It started to look like a game. It was still only one level, but I sent a demo down to Martyn Brown which I met trough phone (He was working for 17bit software). He later got back to me and said things looked interesting. He then set me up with Rico Holmes. Now the story is going to get messy.. Memory is lapsing at parts, so some of this might not be in right order. SOMEHOW.. we got in touch with Peter Tuleby from Uddevalla, Sweden, and started a Project called "Miami Chase" later released as a budget title from CodeMasters. When this was done Martyn was working for a Computer shop chain called MicroByte. He new the owner and introduced him to the idea of starting a software company. Team17 was formed. Rico as artist, Me and Peter as programmers and Martyn as project manager. Our first game was a halfbudget game called "Full Contact" followed by the first 1MB only game at the Amiga market, "Alien Breed". This was our first full price game, and was a hit. Peter then left Team17 and some other people joined. After this we released "Project-X" followed by "SuperFrog","Alien Breed +", "Alien Breed II". After Alien breen II we stared a long term project called "King of Thieves". During this project, the Amiga market dropped dead (As we all traumatically remember) and finally, we as everybody else finally had to jump to the PC and console platforms. Today We're a 70+ people bg company with some good title behind and in front of us (hence WORMS). I have been working on "X2" a shootem up for PSX and SATURN which will be released sometime this autumn. I've been giving it some of the old AMIGA days atmos in it, so people liking shootemup hopefully will appreciaty this... Look out for it.

What was the proudest moment in your career ?
The success of Alien Breed!!

For what specific reason(s) do you think that you are remembered ?
Being a down to earth programmer putting gameplay in front of slow 3dgfx. (At least i would like to think so )

What would you like to be remembered for ?
Im not bloody dead yet...

What made you stop the scene activity ? (and do you remember when?)
The canning of "King of Thieves". We all had to face the fact of Amigas death. That was a kick in the b..ls. However, things are going fine, and PSX is just a dream to programm if one ever enjoyed the AMIGA. Miss the mystic around the amiga world though.....

Thinking back on the good old days, is there anything you regret?

Life DIDN'T end after Amiga. (Well.. a part of it did!) If anyone wants get into game coding, there's always a need for good programmers. PC is (bloody h..l) the machine to show off on today. I think with as many AMIGA enthusiasts joining the PC scene, we might be looking forward to a new AMIGA era, at least one can hope so.
